What causes stress when bringing home a new puppy? THE TRAINING! We work with our little ones to start training them in all these areas so you have less stress, less work and more time to love on them.
This starts at 3 days old and we end on day 16. This involves daily handling that is traumatic but shows the puppies they can recover from these stressful situations. This includes rubbing paws with q-tips, being held upside down and straight up, being held in baby position in hands and holding cold item on paws. By the end of this training, they do not react and even appear completely limp.
We start the potty-training process at the young age 3 weeks old. By the time they go home at 8 weeks, they should be pretty close to accident free. Of course you may have some regression once you bring your new puppy home. That is typical and should improve quickly.
We have a list of over 50 sounds that we introduce to the litter one at a time. We start off low and slow and by the end of the day they are completely unfazed by the noise.
Examples:
door closing
door bell
horns/ sirens
people yelling
sweeper
fireworks
Dogs often have anxiety when going for a ride so we try and minimize that fear. Dogs take stroller rides and car rides a few times a week starting at 3 weeks of age.
It is not surprise that dogs have high anxiety when going to the groomers. We introduce the pups to all aspects of grooming including the water, bath, dryer, brushing and nails.
We intentionally expose our puppies to children, elderly, guys with facial hair, people wearing hats and loud crowds of people.
We give a 5 way Distemper and Parvovirus at 6 weeks. You will want to schedule a vet visit very soon after coming home to get the next set of vaccines.
Dr. Hunt at Smith Vet in Berne is our go to guy. He shares the desire for happy and healthy puppies. We get his approval at 7 weeks old before sending puppies to their new homes.
We health test the dogs in our breeding program with Emark. We Test for genetic health conditions relevant to the breed and 210+ genetic variants associated with disease. It reports on 35+ physical traits, including coat color and length, shedding, adult size and more.
All puppies will be de-wormed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks (right before heading home with you). Please contact your local vet for future treatments.
